No entry sign

Are half your visitors being turned away at the entrance?

Are 70% of your potential customers unable to find you?

The average business and organisational web site is losing money because it shuts out traffic*.

access all areasMany people responsible for commissioning web sites are not aware that official standards exist for web site accessibility and usability.

Cyberium develops web sites which conform to Web Accessibility Initiative standards.

These optimise the chances of your web site being found and used by the largest number of people.

An inclusive approach

There are an estimated 8 million disabled people in the UK alone.

For many of them using the Web brings huge possibilities for extending the quality of their lives, and yet simultaneously great frustrations because many designers do not understand how disabled people use computers and the Web.

What does accessibility mean?

It means:

  • sight-impaired people can still read the site

  • those who use screen readers can 'hear' your site

  • dyslexic people can read it as can those with colour blindness

  • people who are unable to use a mouse and/or keyboard can navigate the site

  • it doesn't lock out people who don't have or can't fully appreciate the necessary plug-in

  • it's easy to find

  • it's quick and easy to download for everyone everywhere

  • it works in all browsers and platforms

  • it is well designed and thought out.

A site that does all of these things will reach a lot more people and those people are more likely to use it and return to it.

Moreover, an accessible website will often also perform better for other users, and score higher with search engines.

Multimedia too

Audiovisual material on the Web, including video and animation, can include features to enable, for example, those with a hearing or sight impairment to appreciate its content.

Legislation

Web sites should largely comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.

There may be some occasions where web sites will be the subject of legal action if they openly discriminate against disabled persons.

Our experience

We have worked with Channel 4 on developing and implementing their policy under the Broadcasters Disability Network manifesto. We have also helped government departments produce accessible and inclusive websites and taken part in E-Government Cabinet Office level workshops to develop standards. We have provided a resource page about designing for accessibility and usability.

How we can help

We can provide assistance to any organisation and company which wants to provide accessible content through the internet. Get a free initial audit of your home page! Ask us for an initial consultation now!
